Speech Therapy Build's Confidence & Success

When a child has a speech difficulty, they are generally aware of it. Children who speak differently from other children know that they do, and this can significantly erode their confidence. For example, when it comes to the classic issues — lisping, turning Rs into Ws, stuttering — speech-language therapy makes an enormous difference to a child's confidence.  Some of these issues may seem cute at five years of age, but at 10 these problems are not.

Some children who are late talkers have a persisting language delay or language impairment that follows them year to year.  Such children develop language skills at a much slower rate and often continue to lag behind other children in language and academic performance over the long term.  A language impairment typically follows into adult hood and can impact on access to post-secondary education and opportunities for work.

If your child seems to be having trouble with speaking clearly, answering questions, telling a story or socializing at school and you know that they have a speech issue then enrolling them in speech therapy is recommended.

Improved communication builds confidence.

speech therapy for stuttering

speech therapists

A Stuttering disorder is characterized by speech disruptions that may include initial sound / syllable or word repetitions, sound prolongations, use of fillers, selective word avoidance, blocking on words and in some cases irregular breathing and or loss of breath.  Stuttering may also be accompanied by secondary behaviours such as eye blinking, facial grimacing, tension, and body movements.  Difficulties with stuttering can cause a child, teen or adult to loose confidence as a speaker, and feel frustrated, embarrassed, or anxious about speaking.

Research has shown early intervention with a Speech-Language Pathologist to be effective in the remediation of stuttering in pre-school children.  For this reason, it is important that parents do not ignore early signs or wait in the hope the stuttering will go away on its own and seek treatment as soon as possible.

When stuttering has become more established, as in the case of older school age children, teens and adults, treatment by a Speech Language Pathologist will focus on targeting fluency enhancing and shaping skills that will help to manage or minimize stuttering and promote fluent speech.

At Speech Therapists of Calgary, our therapists strongly advocate a team approach in the treatment of stuttering in school age children and teens.  The treating Speech-Language Pathologist will work on teaching fluency enhancing and shaping strategies with children and their parents, and equip parents with the necessary tools to provide maximal fluency support for their child at home to facilitate regular fluency practice in natural situations and encourage carryover of skills to daily speaking situations.
