Speech Therapy Build's Confidence & Success

When a child has a speech difficulty, they are generally aware of it. Children who speak differently from other children know that they do, and this can significantly erode their confidence. For example, when it comes to the classic issues — lisping, turning Rs into Ws, stuttering — speech-language therapy makes an enormous difference to a child's confidence.  Some of these issues may seem cute at five years of age, but at 10 these problems are not.

Some children who are late talkers have a persisting language delay or language impairment that follows them year to year.  Such children develop language skills at a much slower rate and often continue to lag behind other children in language and academic performance over the long term.  A language impairment typically follows into adult hood and can impact on access to post-secondary education and opportunities for work.

If your child seems to be having trouble with speaking clearly, answering questions, telling a story or socializing at school and you know that they have a speech issue then enrolling them in speech therapy is recommended.

Improved communication builds confidence.

How Our Speech Therapists Can Help

Our Speech-Language Pathologists begin treatment with a comprehensive assessment in the comfort of your home.  When speech therapy is warranted, the Speech Language Pathologist will apply their clinical skills and collaborate with parents and clients to develop a therapy plan that is both functional and relevant to the needs of the child or individual.  Whether a child is having difficulty speaking clearly, communicating effectively or struggling with listening, reading or written work in school, we consider parent training and education to be a vital component to the service we provide that aims to help children meet their communication and learning potential.

Language and Learning Disabilities, Calgary

"Language based learning disabilities are problems with age appropriate reading, spelling, comprehension, spoken language and writing.  This disorder is not about how smart a person is.  Most people with learning disabilities have average to above average intelligence" ASHA

Speech Language Pathologists play an important role in assessing reading comprehension, decoding, receptive, expressive and written language among children who have been identified by their parents and teachers as having difficulty with language based learning.  The goals of language treatment for the individual with a language based learning / reading problem focus on the specific aspects of reading and writing where the student is having difficulty.  If appropriate, intervention in receptive and expressive language will be provided to support the development of reading and written language skills.  Planning strategies will also be provided to help students organize written assignments.
