Is your child having difficulty with his/her speech, language or literacy development? We are here to help!

At 4 years a child should:

  • Use 1500 to 2000 words
  • combine 4-6 words in sentnces
  • ask many questions
  • follow 3 step directions
  • play and take turns with others
  • categorize objects e.g animals, clothing, food
  • tell stories with a beginning and end
  • match some letter names and sounds e.g. M makes the sound mmmmm


At 5 years a child should:


  • use grammatically correct sentences that are 5-6 words in length
  • use pronouns, I, you, he, she, him, her, they
  • communicate wants and needs to adults and peers
  • follow 3 step directions
  • tell simple jokes
  • understand and define opposite concepts e.g. hard / soft, top / bottom
  • understand various temporal, spatial, quantitative and qualitative concepts
  • recognize common signs e.g, STOP
  • describe objects by feature, function and category
  • talk about events in the past and use past, present and future verb tenses
  • pay attention and stay on task for 10-15 min. activity
  • answer reasoning questions e.g. I wear a jacket because its cold outside
  • describe recent events in correct sequence
  • be understood by strangers
  • look at pictures and tell a story by naming and describing

Does my child need speech therapy?


Parents who are concerned about their child's speech, language, listening, social or communication skills should contact a Speech Language Pathologist as soon as possible.  A referral from your family doctor is not required.  Contacting a Speech Therapist is recommended if any of the following language milestones are not being met:
